After a 9 year hiatus of new music, on-and-off live shows, and cryptic messages, the legendary Swedish House Mafia has returned, but was it what fans expected?
The electronic supergroup consists of Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell, and Steve Angello, who dominated the EDM world, but, at the height of their success, called it quits. After teasing a return at the 20th Anniversary of Ultra Music Festival, fans were left with high hopes, but behind-the-scenes issues derailed any new music from presenting itself. Now, Swedish House Mafia returns, not only with a new manager and a new label, but come with a new single.
“It Gets Better” by Swedish House Mafia dropped on July 15th and was a definite surprise for fans as the announcement came out of no where with billboards appearing in Stockholm, Melbourne, and New York City only a few days earlier. This new single is obviously a well-produced track from these talented and established powerhouse producers, but definitely deviates from what comes to mind when fans hear the name, Swedish House Mafia. The track contains hip-hop characteristics supported by minimal house elements and enticing vocals. Sleek production details through punchy beats, rapid transitions that weave through the various sections, and aggressive synth work throughout the builds. The drop focuses on percussive elements such as the kick, 808, cowbell, and a crisp hi-hat and snare combination, that drive the energy.
Following the release of “It Gets Better,” the trio announced a new album, Paradise Again, will follow later this year. Now, where will Swedish House Mafia take listeners on this new journey? Will they return to the big room/progressive house sounds of “Don’t You Worry Child” or are they straying away from the mainstream to develop a new Swedish House Mafia era?
