Music festivals are designed to create unforgettable memories—weekends defined by community, music, and a temporary escape from everyday life. This festival season, however, that sense of celebration has been met with heartbreak following the death of Jerard Jackson, a 28-year-old Illinois man who attended Electric Forest 2026.
As investigators continue working to determine the full circumstances surrounding Jackson‘s death, both Michigan State Police and his family are seeking answers—though from different perspectives.
Here’s what is known based on publicly available information.
According to Michigan State Police, Jackson was last seen around 10 a.m. on Monday after leaving the Electric Forest campgrounds. Earlier that morning, authorities said Jackson had contacted officers to report what he believed was a criminal incident involving a friend. Police investigated the complaint and determined no crime had occurred.
After leaving the festival grounds, Jackson‘s rental vehicle was later located unoccupied with his wallet and keys still inside. His body was subsequently discovered in a nearby wooded area.
In a public statement, Michigan State Police said, “Based on the investigation, it appears Jackson died by suicide. There is no indication of foul play.” Authorities also noted that “the investigation remains ongoing pending the final report from the medical examiner.“
The agency added, “The Michigan State Police extends its sincere condolences to Jackson‘s family and loved ones during this difficult time.“

Family Publicly Disputes Official Findings
While authorities have released their preliminary findings, Jackson‘s family has publicly disputed the conclusion that he died by suicide. Through statements shared on social media, family members have said they believe significant questions remain unanswered and continue to call for a more comprehensive investigation.
Many of those concerns center on Jackson’s final hours at Electric Forest.
According to publicly shared accounts from individuals close to Jackson, he had paid for several of his friends to attend the festival and covered the cost of the rental SUV used to travel from Illinois to Michigan. Family members have also said Jackson was an experienced festival attendee who had attended numerous events and was familiar with the effects of recreational substances.
Several witnesses have alleged Jackson spoke with festival Ground Control personnel around 8 a.m. Monday morning and did not appear suicidal or intent on harming himself. Roughly one hour later, according to Michigan State Police, Jackson contacted officers himself to report what he believed was a crime involving one of his friends. Police investigated and determined no crime had occurred before leaving the campsite. Additional accounts circulating publicly allege officers returned later that morning after Jackson continued expressing concerns that he believed he had committed a crime. Those accounts have not been independently verified.
Family members and others have also questioned what occurred at Jackson‘s campsite before he disappeared. Public allegations describe disagreements between Jackson and members of his camping group, while others claim his friends temporarily took possession of his rental vehicle keys and cellphone out of concern for his condition. According to those same accounts, Jackson later recovered the vehicle keys but never regained possession of his phone. Stage Hoppers has not independently verified those claims.
Questions have also been raised regarding Jackson’s movements after leaving the campground.
His rental SUV was later found with his wallet reportedly left inside and both front doors open. Family members have questioned how Jackson, whom multiple witnesses described as heavily intoxicated that morning, would have successfully navigated the heavy Monday departure traffic before abandoning the vehicle. Those questions remain unanswered.
Additional concerns involve activity allegedly occurring after Jackson was reported missing. Family members have publicly alleged that attempts were made to access Jackson‘s bank accounts, credit reports, and Apple Wallet around noon Monday despite claims that he no longer had possession of his cellphone. Others have alleged Apple Pay transactions occurred at a nearby gas station after he had already been reported missing. More recently, individuals close to the family have claimed members of Jackson’s group later acknowledged using his Apple Pay that day. None of those claims have been confirmed by investigators, and authorities have not publicly commented on the reported financial activity.
Social media activity has also become part of the public discussion surrounding the case.
In the hours after Jackson disappeared, friends posted online expressing concern for his whereabouts, stating he was experiencing mental health issues and a “bad trip.” After Jackson‘s body was found, many commenters questioned the circumstances surrounding his death and pointed to its suspicious nature. According to numerous observers, several posts, comments, and social media accounts associated with members of the group were later deleted, edited, or made private. The reasons for those changes remain unknown.
Jackson‘s family has also publicly questioned why members of the camping group returned to Illinois while he remained missing. They further allege inconsistencies in statements made by one friend regarding whether he had contacted Jackson‘s mother. Those allegations have not been independently verified.
Another issue raised by the family involves the investigation itself. Family members have stated that responding officers should have been wearing body cameras during their interactions with Jackson and believe those recordings could provide important context regarding his condition before his disappearance. They have also expressed frustration over difficulties locating Jackson‘s body, alleging they were informed his remains had been authorized for cremation because there was reportedly no identified next of kin despite the family saying they had already been communicating with authorities throughout the investigation. Stage Hoppers has not independently verified the administrative circumstances surrounding that decision.
At this stage, several questions remain unanswered—not because of speculation, but because investigators have not yet released those details publicly. Among them are what specifically prompted Jackson’s interaction with police Monday morning, the complete timeline between that encounter and the discovery of his body, whether body-camera footage or additional digital evidence will be released, and what information may emerge once the medical examiner completes the autopsy and toxicology reports.
It’s equally important to separate confirmed facts from assumptions.
Although Jackson attended Electric Forest before his death, authorities have not indicated that the festival, its organizers, or its operations were connected to the incident. Likewise, investigators have not announced any evidence suggesting criminal activity or foul play, and none of the allegations raised publicly by Jackson‘s family or online commentators have been substantiated through publicly released investigative records.
In an era where information spreads instantly, tragic events often become surrounded by speculation before investigators have an opportunity to complete their work. At the same time, families seeking answers often raise questions they believe deserve further investigation. Both realities underscore the importance of distinguishing verified facts from unconfirmed claims.
For now, the facts remain limited but clear. Jerard Jackson attended Electric Forest, left the festival Monday morning, and was later found dead in a wooded area near his vehicle. Michigan State Police have released preliminary findings while continuing their investigation, and Jackson‘s family continues to seek additional answers as they await the final medical examiner’s report.
As more official information becomes available, the public’s understanding of what happened may become clearer. Until then, the most responsible approach is also the simplest one: report what has been confirmed, acknowledge what remains unknown, and remember that behind every headline is a family mourning the loss of someone they loved.
Stage Hoppers extends its deepest condolences to Jerard Jackson’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
