Everything really is bigger in Texas, including its ambitions for live music.
Just outside of Austin, an ambitious new project is taking shape: White Rocks Amphitheater. This planned 10,000-capacity open-air venue nestled in the Texas Hill Country, is aiming to redefine what a modern music venue can be by blending live entertainment with hospitality and natural scenery.
A New Chapter for the Live Music Capital
Austin has long been named the “Live Music Capital of the World,” representing venues like Stubb’s, Moody Amphitheater, The Concourse Project, and ACL Live. Unlike traditional amphitheaters, White Rocks is being envisioned as an entertainment campus.
Located along Highway 71 between Austin and Bee Cave, the amphitheater will serve as the centerpiece of a 71-acre destination developed by White Rocks Entertainment in partnership with UMusic Hospitality & Lifestyle, an affiliate of Universal Music Group. Plans reportedly include:
- A 150-room UMusic Hotel
- Approximately 600 private residences
- Professional recording and content studios
- A 1,500-capacity indoor performance venue
- Restaurants, bars, comedy club, and nightlife spaces
- Spa, wellness facilities, and outdoor recreation
It appears the goal is to create a destination where artists can create, fans can stay for the weekend, and music becomes woven into the experience rather than just the evening’s entertainment.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, pending approvals.
Inspired by Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Developers are comparing the venue to Colorado’s legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, utilizing the landscape to create an immersive outdoor concert experience. While it won’t feature the towering sandstone monoliths, natural acoustics, or rich history that make Red Rocks the beauty that it is, White Rocks hopes to capture a similar feeling by embracing the rolling hills and sweeping vistas of the Texas Hill Country.
Sustainability at the Forefront
Developers say more than 70% of the property will remain preserved open space while incorporating advanced sustainability initiatives, including a closed-loop water reuse system designed to meet Austin-area conservation goals. White Rocks has also pledged to support local artists through residency programs and partnerships while directing a portion of ticket proceeds toward environmental stewardship, arts programming, and public initiatives.
At the same time, the project has already sparked discussion among local conservation groups, who have expressed concerns about potential impacts on nearby protected habitat, traffic, and water quality. Those conversations will likely continue as the development moves through the approval process.
What It Could Mean for EDM
Austin already attracts major dance music events throughout the year, but a large-scale amphitheater could open the door for destination concerts and potentially boutique festivals.
It’s still several years away from welcoming its first crowd, but if the final product lives up to the vision, White Rocks Amphitheater could become an intriguing venue to visit.
