Mexico is Legalizing Cannabis

The US is about to be in between a legal weed sandwich. With Canada passing legislature for recreational use of cannabis in 2018 and Mexico following in their footsteps. Mexico will become the largest legal marijuana market in the world.

Why is this a big deal? The cannabis market is about to become bigger than ever. By comparison, the second and third biggest countries that have legalized, add up to less than a third of Mexico’s population. The bill would legalize possession of up to 28 grams and allow individuals to grow up to six plants.

The local economy will benefit greatly from this bill. 40% of cultivation licenses would be reserved for communities that have been disproportionately impacted by criminal enforcement for the first five years. In 2019 Mexico saw 259 million domestic tourists traveling throughout the country. After a harsh year of COVID, this bill can only mean more tourists than ever when traveling is safe. Mexico hosts some of the best North American festivals such as EDC Mexico, Ultra Mexico, and Dreamfields Festival. With artists like Odesza holding resort-style festival experiences of their own, we can definitely see the event industry growing alongside this bill.
