Australian dance music powerhouses What So Not and Benson have finally answered the call of their fans with the release of their highly anticipated track, “Lights Go Out,” featuring the soulful vocals of Lucy Lucy. This collaboration, years in the making, is set to electrify dance floors across the globe.
The Journey of “Lights Go Out”
“Lights Go Out” has been a staple in What So Not’s sets, captivating audiences since its premiere at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre last year. The track’s journey from inception to release is a testament to the deep bond and shared musical vision between What So Not and Benson. What So Not reminisces, “‘Lights Go Out’ is one of the most requested IDs of my sets in recent years! This tune was birthed from FM synthesis and true friendship. Benson letting me sleep on his couch all those years ago so I could afford my first ever gigs in Melbourne, and Lucy living down the street from my parents, doing some of her first solo recordings with me in my bedroom studio. It’s been a long time coming for everyone hounding my DMs about it and now it’s finally here for the world!”
Benson adds, “’Lights Go Out’ has been a part of our lives for the last two and a half years. We’ve been working on it from city to city, country to country, testing it out in sweaty nightclubs and at giant festivals. It’s now ready to be released into the world. This is the first time collaborating with What So Not, even though our friendship spans over ten years. It’s also my first time singing on a record. I honestly don’t think that would have happened without What So Not. He encouraged me to back myself and try something new, and here we are. It’s the cherry on top to have our dear friend Lucy Lucy on this record; she really brings it home, pairing all the elements together in one place. We hope you enjoy it.”
A Track Born from True Friendship and Creative Synergy
The creation of “Lights Go Out” is deeply rooted in the personal and professional connections between What So Not, Benson, and Lucy Lucy. This track marks the first collaboration between What So Not and Benson, despite a decade-long friendship. Benson’s debut as a vocalist on this record adds a fresh and exciting dimension to the track. Lucy Lucy, who has previously collaborated with What So Not on tracks like “Every Single Time,” brings her unique flair, perfectly complementing the energetic production.
Dance Dance Revival: A Tour to Reinvigorate Australian Dance Music
The release of “Lights Go Out” coincides with What So Not’s Dance Dance Revival tour, a mission to rejuvenate the dance music scene in Australia. With many music festivals being canceled this year, this tour aims to give young producers the platform they need to shine. Emerson, the mastermind behind What So Not, shares his vision, “The local scene in Australia has been hit HARD and it’s a sign of the world to come.. but it’s not without hope. There are new faces emerging and I would love to put them on my shows. Dance Dance Revival is about hatching a plan to revive our clubs and cities and pay it forward to the next generation of DJs and producers in Australia. I’m even going to be playing super rare downtempo opening sets to get punters through the door early.”
Benson: Bringing Energy and Passion Back Home
Benson, now based in the US, is also returning to Australia for the tour. Known for his chart-topping hits and infectious stage presence, Benson’s performances are always a highlight. From local festivals like Splendour In The Grass to international stages at Lollapalooza, his star continues to rise.
