Hailing from Seoul, Korea, Biosyrup lands on Stage Hoppers by unleashing the magnificent “Thunderbird.” Based on the Native American legendary creature of the same name, the new release embodies the power and strength associated with the supernatural being.

Biosyrup opens “Thunderbird” with a sacred and mesmerizing soundscape. The atmosphere he creates resembles a cinematic soundtrack opening as the story begins to unfold before an awestruck audience. Then, the strong, pounding drums and commanding bass alert the listener of the tension that something is forthcoming. From the distant build, the Thunderbird is unleashed with a resounding screech followed by the harsh sound design, capturing the intensity of the creature. Then, serenity reveals itself in the breakdown, exemplifying not only the power but the mystical beauty of the fabled Thunderbird.

As he continues to captivate audiences with his electrifying and visionary sound, Biosyrup is one to keep your eye on; bridging the gap between science and art with each captivating sound.

Learn more about Biosyrup, his musical aesthetic, and future projects below.
What first got you into creating music?

“I first joined the school band in university and played electric guitar. It was a life changing moment for me. I used to listen to rock and heavy metal music a lot, but I never played any instruments before then. When I first got into band, I was surprised that I found something I enjoyed that much. I then went into military service for two years, since it’s mandatory in Korea. But I think it’s important to do something that I really love. So I moved to America to study music at Dubspot and then Icon Collective.”

How was your experience at Icon Collective?

“It was really amazing. I actually never got to meet many people that made music, but then I went to Icon Collective and it was great to be around so many talented people and learn so much stuff. First time I got there I felt small, but I got to know other musicians and it really made music more fun.”

You’re originally from Korea, but you’ve lived in various cities around the world. How has that experience influenced your approach to music?

“Actually, living in New York was a life changing moment. I got to meet so many different people, different cultures mixed in the city. So that really changed my perspective on life. In Korea, I was just trying to be like everyone else. But since moving to New York, there are so many different types of lifestyles. I realized that I don’t have to live like everyone else. So I decided to pursue music.”

Can you tell us more on how you discovered the Native American legend of the Thunderbird and why you decided to use that as inspiration for this track?

“When I started my artist brand as Biosyrup, I thought it would be fun to make theme songs for mythical creatures. So I was watching National Geographic, and they started talking about the Thunderbird and something just clicked. I imagined what that creature would sound like in my head and decided to put it into my computer. The intro started sounding awesome and I really wanted to give the audience a sacred and epic moment. Since it went really well, I decided to make a series of mythical creature theme songs. The first one is ‘Thunderbird’ and there are a few more in the works.”

In your bio, you compare music making to DNA sequencing. Can you elaborate on what you mean by that?

“The point is, DNA sequencing is like copying and pasting the code. Then in making music, I tweak a lot of samples, then I cut my favorite parts into something new. So that workflow of mine is similar to science. Music and science are all connected.”

For our fellow Stage Hoppers and festival goers, what is your favorite festival or show that you have attended?

“Lost Lands 2019. It was crazy and overwhelming but I enjoyed every stage and the whole concept.”
