Martin Garrix’s ID with Third Party Gets Stolen and Published

Martin Garrix

Today, Martin Garrix shared some shocking news to his instagram story. Someone stole his unreleased ID with Third Party and published it under their own name on Spotify, Youtube and Apple Music. The assailant goes by the name “Benedict Wat” and Garrix wasted no time calling him out on social media.

This isn’t the first time something of the nature has happened to the world-renowned DJ and producer. He also shared another story in which he details a previous incident. Garrix shares “same thing happened with this idea, multiple people stole the chord + melodies which ends up with me never releasing it.” Now, copying chords is an entirely different and complex scenario. Recently, Ed Sheeran actually won his copyright trial that began with allegations that he copied Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” for his song “Thinking Out Loud.” In the court room testimony, Sheeran said, “These chords are common building blocks which were used to create music long before ‘Let’s Get It On’ was written and will be used to create music long after we are all gone.”

However, what just happened with Martin Garrix is an entirely different situation. He outright stole an ID that Garrix has played in his live sets. Now, I’m no expert, but it seems Garrix would have a strong lawsuit against this individual. He has of course played this song out live and I’m sure has files backed up and dated as to when he began this project with Third Party.

Is this just a normal event in todays music scene? If so, why do we accept these standards that take away creative value from artists? Stay tuned if anything more unfolds with Martin Garrix stolen ID, we at Stage Hoppers will update you.
